Story writing and Guild Lore in the Old Republic

As a Sith aligned guild and community for Star Wars: the Old Republic, we write our stories within the Old Republic Era from the Treaty of Coruscant, before and after.

You may see BTC, ATC and BBY abbreviations used when referring to dates and roleplay within the Star Wars Universe. As the treaty of Coruscant is signed in 3,653BBY (0ATC) ending the Great Galactic war. A cold war has initiated between the Sith Empire and the Galactic Republic as tensions grow over the agreement made on Alderaan.

BTC = Before the treaty of Coruscant

ATC = After the treaty of Coruscant

BBY = Before the Battle of Yavin.

For a better insight onto the timeframe we have been using so far, please look at the events page of the Guild Wiki to help you gain an insight into the events of the our Brotherhood.

Things to consider...

When writing a story it is important to consider several factors and angles to provide a great roleplaying experience for the participants involved. Below are a few of the elements that you could consider to create a good story.

Theme – [The overall theme of your story]

Is it about conflict between civilisations, a war/battle between the Sith Empire and Galactic Republic, a love story, a thriller or maybe a story of exploration, diplomacy and discovery? What your story is based around, will generate the ideas and concepts that you would like the story to follow.

Setting – [Where will your story take place]

Chandrilla or maybe the Twi’lek homeworld of Ryloth. It is important to consider where your story takes place to accommodate the plot of your story. If you know where the action is happening, you can consider lore and apply it to your story. If you are writing a story on Tatooine, you should consider what animals, locales and environment are available during the Old Republic Era that you could use and introduce as npcs or statics in your storyline.

Plot – [The events that are going to take place in your story]

Is there a tenuous agreement over Kolto on a planet? Perhaps you are going to seek a lost artefact, or maybe you are engaging in battle against the Galactic Republic. Will there be a crises point forcing your roleplayers to make decisions or perhaps it will come unexpectedly throwing them into a new situation. What are the cogs that turn the chain of events in your story, to drive it forward.

Characters – [Who are the protagonists / antagonists in your story]

Perhaps the Jedi or Republic has allied with a new planet. Who are the prominent figures and how will they react to a Sith Presence. Perhaps a Hutt crime lord has made a deal with the Hands and the deal has turned sour. How would that prominent figure react and deal with the situation. Every story needs its heroes and villains at its forefront.  The success or downfall of your situations always grant reactions from important figurehead NPC's.  What will the Jedi think if a Bounty Hunter you sent assasinated one of their key figures during a peace negotiation?

Direction & Resolution – [Where is your story going and how will it end]

It is important to keep a leash over the direction of your story to keep it moving forward. Keeping GM notes or short bullet points of this can help keep your story going the way you want it. In these notes you’ll want to consider an end point for your story, its resolution. Will it be open ended leaving another chapter for it to continue; perhaps you’ll bring it to a complete close. Whatever you decide it is important to know where your story is and where it intends to go using the above elements.

Final Word

Remember as a Star Wars roleplaying guild, we strive for great quality and interesting stories, so please check and research your lore and draw your story within the confinement of realism. If you are unsure, ask another member, Officer or Council member about any questions you might have regarding the Old Republic Era. This helps keep an authentic Star Wars roleplay experience for everyone, allowing you to write creative and imaginative stories for the guild to enjoy.

Happy writing and may the Force serve you well!
