How To Craft a Bounty Hunter

Bounty Hunters; fierce independent individuals who track down, capture or kill any type of target, that is unfortunate enough to have a bounty placed on their head.  The Bounty Hunter profession has existed for centuries and although most that become such hunters, do not survive due to their incompetence and weakness, there are those, who do prove themselves worthy reap the rewards from the detail, effort and skill put to the hunt.

"Both infamous and anonymous at the same time, Bounty Hunters are far more than mercenaries for hire - they're heirs to a professional legacy – an ancient brotherhood with a glorious history."―Unknown

Those who succeed become notorious and well known, feared by those who know of their exploits around the galaxy, so much, even countless Jedi and Sith knew the danger faced when in their presence.  Now in this time of turmoil, even The Sith Empire has become interested in their professionalism hiring those who are willing to use their prowess.

Crafting a professional hunter

When you start to create your Bounty Hunter character, there are some factors which you should think about, after all becoming a Hunter is a difficult path and only those with honour and detail to skill would survive.

Background

Bounty Hunters appear in nearly every race in the galaxy, giving each Hunter a unique story.  Many that become Hunters often have a story as to why they become one, perhaps departing a Mandolorian clan to become a Bounty Hunter, maybe out of strife and necessity, the need of Credits, or perhaps purely for the thrill of personal gain above everyone else, seeking trophies for your pride.

One thing is for sure that times are tough with the ongoing war and there is fierce competition between the Smugglers and Bounty Hunters for work.  With the Sith Empire and Galactic Republic at each other’s throats, there are more dangerous bounties available for those with the nerve and mettle.  A rouge Moff or a key Republic target needs removed, will you be the one to accept?

However, it is not just the background of the Bounty Hunter that makes him/her unique, it is the pride and detail the put into their setup as each Hunter has their own specialisations and ideas.

 Abilities & Attributes

Successful Bounty Hunters have made their names known across the whole galaxy in the Star Wars Universe.  Durge, Boba Fett, Cad Bane and Calo Nord were some of these successful Hunters and they all had one thing in common; they had extreme abilities.

The ability of a person or a Bounty Hunter in this case, is what determines how your character will be unique. Every individual has his/hers own strengths or weaknesses to explore.

Bounty Hunters must take into consideration what kind of abilities you want them to have. Different races have different racial abilities or qualities. For example, Trandoshans had super-sensitive eyes that can see into the infra red level.  How could you utilise this ability for your character?

Perhaps you specialise in assassination, which excels in the preference of using a sniper and tracking, but can be vulnerable when it comes to melee combat. What about a character that enjoys the use of gadgets and weapons like wrist rockets and flamethrowers, but really can’t stand blasters or vice versa. You should also think about how your character s physique will affect how you fight, will you rely on raw, brute strength or will you prefer being more agile and evasive.

Gear, Gadgets & Armour

Gear means everything for a Bounty Hunter, Armour, weapons, and gadgets.  Everything is essential to be one of the best. Who knows how many times Jango Fett would have died without his Mandalorian armour and jetpack or what Calo Nord would do without his precious Mandalorian blasters? Bounty Hunters strive only for the best of gear and they will use incredible amounts of credits to obtain these unique items for their inventory.

Start for example with a simple armour set, a blaster and maybe some kind of explosives. You could later work yourself up and for example get that shiny Mandalorian armour you have always desired or a powerful wrist rocket.

Also, consider disguise as can’t just walk across the streets of Coruscant with Madolorian armour, so be mindful of your outfitting in your situation and environment.  You should also take into consideration if your armour will affect your combat style. Heavy armour means less speed and agility, while little armour makes room for more quick and fast manoeuvres.

Morale & Creed

The last important factor is morale and your Hunters Creed. Boba Fett had a morale code that restricted what bounties that would be acceptable for him, while Cad Bane on the other hand had no limits whatsoever.  Will your character be a Hunter with honour or will you just be a ruthless and brutal hunter that will kill anyone and anything to reach your goals?

This will kind of perspective of character morale can make interesting roleplay.  If you for example refuse to kill an unharmed victim when a Sith Master orders you to do so or perhaps you will threaten a situation with a thermal detonator. Your morale and choice depends on your ethics and the methods you intend to use, to collect up on the bounties available.
